Launched at the 1997 Paris show, the Fazer was Yamaha's budget half-faired middleweight, using a retuned YZF600R Thundercat four in a steel frame with R1-sourced front brakes. Smaller carburettors gave it better low and midrange pull than the Thundercat. Critics liked the brakes and flexible engine but found the twin headlights weak at night.
